Explainer / Messiah
Titus 2:13
looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Savior Yeshua Messiah;
We kept the ASV's wording, in modern English: "the great God and our Savior Yeshua Messiah."
Why
Word order
The English follows the Greek order word for word: τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ ("of the great God") καὶ ("and") σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ("Savior of us," that is, "our Savior") Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.
One article
The Greek has a single article, τοῦ, before "great God," and none before "Savior." The English also has a single "the," and adds none before "Savior." Two singular nouns joined by καί under one article in this way is the construction described by Granville Sharp's rule, under which the two nouns usually refer to one person.
"Savior" in Titus
σωτήρ is used in this letter both of God (1:3, 2:10, 3:4) and of Yeshua (1:4, 3:6).
"Of the glory."
The thing that appears is τῆς δόξης, "the glory," and "of the great God" depends on it.
More
The English keeps that chain: "appearing of the glory of the great God."
"the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" (ASV text); "our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ" (ASV margin); "our great God and Savior Jesus Christ" (ESV, NIV, NASB).
