Hebrews 8:13
In that he says, A new covenant, he has made the first old. But that which is becoming old and growing aged is near to vanishing away.
ἐν τῷ λέγειν Καινὴν πεπαλαίωκεν τὴν πρώτην, τὸ δὲ παλαιούμενον καὶ γηράσκον ἐγγὺς ἀφανισμοῦ.
What we did
We kept the ASV's wording, in modern English ("says," "has," "growing," "near to").
Why
"The first."
τὴν πρώτην is feminine, agreeing with διαθήκη, "covenant," from the quotation just before (8:8–12, from Jer 31:31–34).
More
The ASV's "the first" leaves the noun understood, as the Greek does.
πεπαλαίωκεν
is perfect tense, "he has made old."
Present participles
παλαιούμενον καὶ γηράσκον, "becoming old and growing aged," describe something in progress.
More
The ASV keeps this with "is becoming … waxeth," and we kept it with "is becoming … growing."
ἐγγὺς ἀφανισμοῦ
has no verb in the Greek; "is near to vanishing away" supplies the "is," as the ASV does.
