Galatians 3:13

Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the Torah, having become a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree:

Χριστὸς ἡμᾶς ἐξηγόρασεν ἐκ τῆς κατάρας τοῦ νόμου γενόμενος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν κατάρα, ὅτι γέγραπται· Ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὁ κρεμάμενος ἐπὶ ξύλου.

What we did

We kept the ASV's wording, in modern English, with "Torah" for νόμος and "Messiah" for "Christ."

Why

  1. νόμος = "Torah."

Here νόμος means the Mosaic law, and this version renders it "Torah" wherever it has that meaning.

  2. "The curse of the Torah."

Paul has just quoted the curse in 3:10, from Deut 27:26: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things written in the book of the Torah, to do them." The phrase in 3:13 refers back to that quotation.

  3. ἐξηγόρασεν ἐκ, "redeemed from."

The verb means to buy out; with ἐκ, to buy out of something.

    More

Its object is τῆς κατάρας, "the curse."

  4. The quotation

is from Deut 21:23, about one hanged on a tree.

    More

ASV "every one that hangeth" becomes "everyone who hangs."
